Agnontas

Just one bend below Amarantos and at a distance of 8 km from the town, there is Agnontas, full of pines. It took its name from the Agnontas or Agnon, an Olympic athlete in the sport of running from Peparithos, when he returned in victory from Olympia in 569 AD, and his ship reached this place.

To honour him, they gave his name to the area, and his face is pictured on a silver coin of the classical era.

There, the pines literally touch the sea and the sunset is unique. Agnontas is a fishing port, as there are several fishing boats tied there, and every night they go out into the open to catch fish and squids (known as Illex squids), that you can enjoy if you sit at one of its many fish taverns.
